While many organizations have closed doors and sent employees home, one Hamilton County non-profit believes this is a crucial time to support its clients.
“I want all of Hamilton County to know we’re alive and well and still delivering meals,” said Beth Gehlhausen, executive director of Meals on Wheels of Hamilton County. “We’re keeping staff, volunteers and clients safe by following guidelines from the CDC and our local health department, as well as minimizing exposure with no face-to-face contact. At this time, all meals are delivered to coolers on clients’ front porches.”
Many find it hard to believe that food insecurity exists in an Indiana county known for its prosperity, but the problem knows no boundaries. Meals on Wheels of Hamilton County believes we all have a responsibility to share in the solution, especially given today’s uncertain circumstances.
Meals on Wheels of Hamilton County is actively taking steps to help the most vulnerable – our elderly homebound and those with disabilities – within our community. Our volunteers and our donors are stepping up above and beyond to continue to be able to serve current clients, as well as, new clients during the pandemic.
“I want the community to know we’re available, and we have capacity to help,” said Gehlhausen. “We’re taking new clients daily. Individuals just need to call us or go on the website and fill out the online application.”
Like many non-profits, Meals on Wheels has faced the challenge of diminishing funding from both government and private sector sources while community need continues to grow. Meals on Wheels of Hamilton County is pleased to announce that due to a sizable donation from Heartland Church of Fishers, it has sustained capacity to continue to serve the at-risk, homebound elderly in Hamilton County during this uncertain time.
Last year, Meals on Wheels of Hamilton County served more than 302 individuals 43,000 meals. This year’s numbers continue to grow. While donations of any size are appreciated (as $50 provides meals for one week for a Meals on Wheels client while $210 provides a month of meals), a 2020 campaign goal of $50,000 has been set.
