Meals on Wheels of Hamilton County needs an army of volunteer drivers to deliver hot meals to elderly, disabled and homebound residents on 18 different routes serving clients in Fishers, Noblesville, Carmel, Westfield, Sheridan, Cicero, Arcadia and Atlanta.
Corporate partners promote community service within their business by “loaning” employees to Meals on Wheels over the lunch period to deliver meals. Additional paid time off may be necessary in conjunction with an employee’s lunch hour to accomplish the task. Many area businesses find this kind of community service a rewarding way for their employees to engage in meaningful interaction with residents who may also be their customers. A maximum commitment of two hours per delivery counts towards community service. Meals are delivered between 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Meals are picked up at one of our designated healthcare facilities by 11 a.m.
Volunteer drivers develop a one-on-one caring relationship with the clients they serve. Delivering meals is a great way to make a significant difference in someone’s life. Drivers can deliver alone or in pairs; it’s a great way to spend a little time in service to others.
Volunteers can decide how often they want to drive depending on their personal or business schedule. Some drive once a month. Others drive once a week. Several of our business partners adopt a particular route and their employees drive the route once a week. Car magnets are provided that give the business recognition and visibility while the drivers are out delivering meals. The magnets include your company’s logo.
The requirements for drivers are simple. They need a smile, plus a caring attitude and
- a valid driver’s license
- proof of liability insurance on your vehicle
- an approved application including a background check
- a commitment to drive when scheduled
- promptness and punctuality to pick up meals
- an orientation ride with an experienced driver for training
- a reliable vehicle and ability to navigate with a map and written instructions
- and strength and energy to load the coolers into the car.
